Michael Bolus is a medical student, engineer, scientist, photographer, and musician.

Photography

I have been fortunate enough to have a camera in my hand since I was nine years old. While it is and will remain mostly a hobby, I have shot weddings, festivals, and portraits over the years. I am available for hire for photographing proposals/engagements, graduation, headshots, and family portraits. On request, I may be willing to shoot small weddings. For availability and pricing please email me with the subject photography request.

Music

For years, I have played guitar and sung. Unlike my other three brothers who are multi-instrumentalists, this is about all I can do! That said, I have also written original songs, some of which I have recorded and published on YouTube. I have had the great fortune of playing with my brother Nicholas Bolus on many occasions as a duo (“The Boli”) and with many other talented friends/artists.

Research

Like many students, I conducted research as an undergraduate at the University of Alabama. In the lab of Dr. Seungsin Kim, I tested applications of terahertz (THz) radiation in biochemical sensing with the goal of eventual use in THz medical imaging.

After graduating from the UA, I attended Georgia Tech and Emory University where I obtained a PhD in biomedical engineering with Dr. Garrett Stanley. This lab’s research is poised at the intersection of basic neuroscience and engineering with a special emphasis on understanding the coding of information in the brain and interfacing with it: i.e. reading and writing the neural code. My doctoral research centered around applying principles of engineering control theory to neuronal stimulation using optogenetics (closed-loop optogenetic control). My dissertation (“Closed loop optogenetic control and thalamic state”) is available for download here.
